At Rockaway, the 2010 vintage started with a cool and fairly wet spring like the rest of the Alexander Valley. Late rains threatened to generate a large canopy, and required careful management to avoid cluster shading within the canopy. The cool spring evolved into an exceptionally cool summer, with a three day heat spike in August, followed by a September that started out warm and stayed warm at Rockaway, getting fruit ripening kicked into high gear. We harvested Cabernet blocks 1, 7 and 2, along with some Malbec and Petit Verdot on a major harvest day, October 21st. The cooler but exceptional Cabernet from block 8 was harvested on October 27th as chilly morning temperatures dropped into the 30s, signaling the end of the season for an exceptional vintage.
