We barrel fermented 60% of this wine and aged that portion in barrel for six months, offering the wine a touch of brown spice and vanilla, while cold fermenting the remainder to maximize a fresh fruit-forward character. Bright lemon and apple aromas mingle with hints of toasty barrel complexity, and on the palate, pear and pineapple with spice and refreshing acidity will have you coming back for another glass. The 2012 vintage started off warm and dry, with little to no frost. By mid-summer people began to whisper about how perfect the growing season was going, but not too loudly as no one wanted to jinx it! Rain-free warm days and cool nights were the rule, with no storms or heat spikes. The realcheering began when we finally started picking the fruit, beginning on August 27th, a full sixteen days earlier than the year before, which feels like eons at harvest time. We finished picking the last of our Chardonnay on October 22nd under ideal conditions.
