This recently planted chardonnay vineyard in the cool Sonoma Coast region is on fairly deep clay soils, and is subjected to windy conditions most afternoons. Just like trees growing at the shore, vine growth is slow and limited, producing just the right amount of leaves to get a normal crop ripe, without any excess vigor that might otherwise create canopy management issues.
