Chalk Hill Vineyard

Chalk Hill - 48 acres, established 1998

Rodney Strong Vineyards was the first to designate a wine from the Chalk Hill appellation in northern Sonoma County after planting chardonnay here more than 30 years ago. Named for its highly reflective white soils -- the result of a deposit of ash from an ancient volcanic eruption -- these soils are shallow, fast draining and rather acidic. Cooled by the Russian River Valley climate, vines are naturally low-yielding, and produce intensely flavored wines with a distinct petrichor, or what founder Rodney Strong used to call "tongue on stone."
